The National Audubon Society U.S.A. commissioned a group of 3 designs with drawings by Shirleen Faircloth after the original engraving by Havell of London in John James Audbon's Birds of America including the Bald Eagle, the Key West Quail, and the Ruffled Grouse. These boxes were sold through the Horchow Collection, Dallas.
Inscribed inside the lid: "Bald Eagle" (HALIAEETUS LEUCOCEPHALUS) Range: Breeds from Alaska and Ungava to Lower California and Florida". Inside base: B/W drawing of an eagle in flight. On the base is inscribed: "THE AUDUBON ENAMELS Commissioned to mark the 75th Anniversary in 1980 of the National Audubon Society, U.S.A. In an edition limited to 150 the number of this box is U.S. 5."
In very good condition, however, there is a minute chip/scratch in wing plus some bubbles in enamel. Larger size box - 2.75 x 2" x 1 9/16" oval hinged box. Circa 1980.
Note: There was a second set of 150 issued in the U.K. as well. Photos of all three designs can be found on page 125 of "The First 25 Years of Halcyon Days Enamels" book (available below).
