This magnificent gold-embellished box marks the 850th anniversary of the birth of the legendary medieval hero, Richard 'The Lionheart' famous throughout Christendom for his exploits in the Third Crusade He was born in Oxford on 8th September 1157, the son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, and crowned King of England on 3rd September 1189. The warrior king, mounted on his charger, is portrayed on the lid, whilst scenes around the base include his marriage to Princess Berengaria of Navarre and his coronation in Westminster Abbey; his Great Seal of 1195 appears inside.
