On 21st May 1932, the American aviator, Amelia Earhart, became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She took off from Newfoundland in her Lockheed Vega single-engined monoplane and landed some 15 hours and over 2,000 miles later in a field near Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Amelia's courageous flight estabished her as the acknowledged queen of the air and she became a source of inspiration to many - especially to women.
